Why the birth time matters most here
The ascendant is the sign that was rising in the east at your birth moment. The whole zodiac rises past the horizon once a day, so the lagna changes roughly every two hours — faster than any other placement in the chart. That makes it the most sensitive thing in a kundli to a wrong birth time: an hour out and the lagna, and every house built from it, can shift by a whole sign. If your recorded time is approximate, treat the lagna as approximate too.
What is the difference between lagna, rashi and sun sign?
Three different points. The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth minute. The rashi is where the Moon stood. The sun sign is where the Sun stood. All three are usually different signs, and Vedic astrology reads the lagna as the frame the houses are counted from.
Is this the same as a rising sign?
Same idea, different zodiac. Western astrology reads the rising sign against the tropical zodiac; this page reads it against the sidereal one with the Lahiri ayanamsa, which is what Vedic astrology uses, so the two often name different signs for the same birth.
What if I do not know my exact birth time?
Then the lagna is a guess, and this page cannot tell you which one is right. The lagna moves a whole sign roughly every two hours, so an approximate time gives an approximate answer — the Moon sign and nakshatra, which move far more slowly, stay reliable.
