What a nakshatra is
The Moon's path is divided into 27 nakshatras, each further split into four padas. Your birth nakshatra is finer than your rashi — a rashi spans two and a quarter nakshatras — and it is what several of the more detailed readings work from, kundli matching among them. Because the Moon moves through a nakshatra in about a day, the birth time matters more here than almost anywhere else in a chart.
How is a nakshatra different from a rashi?
A rashi is one of twelve equal divisions of the zodiac; a nakshatra is one of 27 smaller divisions the Moon's path is split into, each with four padas. Every rashi contains parts of two or three nakshatras.
What if I do not know my exact birth time?
The Moon crosses into a new nakshatra roughly once a day, so an uncertain birth time genuinely matters here more than for a rashi. Enter the closest time you know; a birth near the boundary is worth confirming.
What is a nakshatra used for?
Kundli matching (Nakshatra and Nadi are two of the thirty-six gunas), naming conventions in some traditions, and several of the more detailed timing readings on this site.
