The great night of Shiva. Devotees fast through the day and stay awake at night, doing puja in the four parts (prahar) of the night. The Shivling is bathed with water, milk and honey, and bel leaves, dhatura and white flowers are offered while chanting Om Namah Shivaya. The puja at Nishita kaal, around midnight, is the main one, and that is why the date is fixed by the tithi running at midnight.
