What is kept

A hard fast kept by women, without food or water, through the day and the night. They make clay idols of Shiva and Parvati, do the puja in the evening, hear the Hartalika katha, and many stay awake all night. The story is of Parvati's friends taking her away to the forest so that she would not be married to anyone but Shiva. Married women keep it for their husband, and unmarried girls for a good husband. It is kept most of all in UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
