What is kept
Putrada means the giver of children. Couples who wish for a child keep this fast and pray to Lord Vishnu. There are two Putrada Ekadashis in a year: this one in Pausha and one in Shravan. In South India it often falls as Vaikuntha Ekadashi, when the Vaikuntha dwaram of Vishnu temples is opened. Like every ekadashi it is kept for Lord Vishnu: no rice or grains, and the fast is broken the next day, on Dwadashi, at the parana time given on this page.
