❦What is a panchang?
Panchang means the five limbs of a day — tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana. Tithi is the angle between the Sun and the Moon; nakshatra is where the Moon stands. All five change through the day, which is why each one here carries the time it runs until.
1. Tithi — the lunar day
A tithi is 12° of distance between the Moon and the Sun. The Moon does not move at an even speed, so a tithi runs anywhere from 19 to 26 hours — which is why it rarely begins at sunrise and why this page prints the time each one ends. Thirty to a lunar month: fifteen in the waxing half, Pratipada to Purnima, and fifteen in the waning half, Pratipada to Amavasya.
2. Vara — the weekday
The seven days belong to seven grahas: Sunday to the Sun, Monday the Moon, Tuesday Mars, Wednesday Mercury, Thursday Jupiter, Friday Venus, Saturday Saturn. The vara turns at sunrise, not at midnight — so at three in the morning the day has not changed yet, and a panchang that says otherwise is reading a clock instead of the sky.
3. Nakshatra — where the Moon stands
The circle is cut into 27 parts of 13°20' each, and the Moon crosses all of them in about 27.3 days. Each nakshatra has its own lord and its own nature, and each is quartered into padas. A 28th, Abhijit, is counted in some muhurat reckonings and not in the 27 this page prints.
4. Yoga — the Sun and Moon added
Add the two longitudes together and divide by 13°20' and you have the yoga: 27 of them, from Vishkambha to Vaidhriti. Some are held to help what is begun in them and some to hinder it — Vyatipata and Vaidhriti are the two usually avoided.
5. Karana — half a tithi
Six degrees of the same Sun–Moon distance, so two karanas to every tithi and sixty to a lunar month. Eleven names fill them: seven that repeat and four that come once. Vishti is the one to know — it is Bhadra, and work begun in it is held to come to nothing, which is why this page gives it a card of its own.
