What is kept
Married women keep a fast for the long life of their husband and worship the vat (banyan) tree. They go round the tree, tying a raw cotton thread around it, and hear the story of Savitri, who brought her husband Satyavan's life back from Yamraj. North India keeps it on this Amavasya of Jyeshtha. In Maharashtra, Gujarat and the South, the same vrat is kept fifteen days later, on Jyeshtha Purnima, as Vat Purnima.
