What is kept
The first of the nine nights of Maa Durga. On this morning the kalash is set up at home (Ghatasthapana) and barley is sown beside it. Each day one form of the Devi is worshipped, starting with Shailputri today. Many people fast for all nine days or for the first and last day. In Gujarat the nights are for garba and dandiya.
