What is kept
The new moon, when the moon cannot be seen. It is the day for the ancestors: families do tarpan, offering water and til, give food and daan, and many take a bath in a holy river. New work is usually not started on Amavasya. It is called Somvati Amavasya when it falls on a Monday and Shani Amavasya on a Saturday, and both are kept with extra care.
