What is kept
The monthly night of Shiva, on the fourteenth day of the waning moon. Devotees fast in the day and do the puja at night, around midnight, in Nishita kaal, bathing the Shivling and offering bel leaves while chanting Om Namah Shivaya. That is why the date is fixed by the tithi running at midnight. The biggest one of the year is Maha Shivaratri.
