The birthday of Shri Krishna, born at midnight in Kansa's prison in Mathura. People fast through the day, decorate a jhoola for Laddu Gopal, and sing bhajans till midnight, when the birth is celebrated with a puja, conch shells and bells, and the fast is broken with prasad. Mathura and Vrindavan celebrate for days. In Maharashtra the next day is Dahi Handi, when young men make human pyramids to break a pot of curd.
