Pitru Paksha, the fortnight for the ancestors, begins with this full moon, and the Purnima shraddh is done today. For the next fifteen days, families do shraddh and tarpan for each ancestor on the tithi they passed away, offering water, til and food, and feeding Brahmins, cows and crows. Weddings, house-warmings and big purchases are usually put off in these days. The fortnight ends on Sarva Pitru Amavasya.
