What is kept

The day the sun moves into Makar (Capricorn). People take a holy dip in a river, eat and give til and gud (sesame and jaggery), and fly kites, most of all in Gujarat, where the day is called Uttarayan. In Punjab, Lohri is the night before. In Tamil Nadu the same day is Pongal, in Assam it is Magh Bihu, and in UP and Bihar people eat khichdi.
